“Wow!” Maddie pressed her hands and face against the glass window of the ski lift as we rode it up into the air over the resort. “Look at that! We’re flying! Like in the plane!”

“Almost like that.” Becca beamed at Cordell and me as we all listened to our daughter’s happy exclamations. “This trip up the mountain won’t last nearly as long as our flight the other day, though.”

“Oh, good.” Maddie nodded absently as she continued to look out the window. “That took a long time.”

I grinned. The plane ride had actually been relatively short, but the excitement of the day had made it feel really long to me, too. Everything since then, though, had been a complete blur. Now, I wanted to slow down a little and savor all of the new and exciting experiences we were having as a family.

Once the lift dropped all of us off, I had to laugh a little. I wasn’t sure whether the thirteen of us looked really cool or really crazy in our brand-new ski gear as we lined up on the side of the mountain, but the good energy was palpable in the air as we waited for the instructor to finish going over the rules and safety precautions.

I was especially surprised that they had supplied a set of miniature skis for Maddie to wear, but they assured us that plenty of kids as young as three years old would be out there enjoying the beginner slopes.

We had all agreed that we would take the first lap together as a family and that we’d go at Maddie’s pace so we could take plenty of pictures and video. Later, we could take turns on the more advanced routes if we wanted.

“Are you ready, pumpkin?” I asked once we’d been given the go-ahead by the instructor. Becca helped her push off on her skis while Cordell and I stood back and snapped photos. “Look at you go! You’re a natural!”

“It’s fun!” Maddie squealed as she slowly swept past us. “I’m skiing! Daddy! Papa! I’m skiing!”

“You’re doing great, sweetie,” Cordell called out. “Just be careful, okay?”

“Okay,” she called back even though I was pretty sure she would have gladly gone rocketing down that mountain on her own if we’d given her half a chance. “Mama, let’s go faster!”

“We’re already going fast, honey,” she answered, laughing. “Isn’t it fun? Can you see the resort from here?”

I couldn’t hear Maddie’s answer, but even I was having a hard time making out the scattered, tiny shapes at the base of the mountain where we’d been staying. Having grown up in Montana, I was no stranger to the outdoors or snowy mountains, but this felt different. This was the first time we’d been up in the mountains together as a family, and there was something really special about seeing our daughter standing up on a pair of skis for the first time.

She was growing up fast, and the next few years would be full of first times that we wouldn’t get a chance to repeat.
